Has Marc Jacobs Gone Mad?

Do you want "a retro carryall with all-American appeal, [is] a warm-weather essential?" This is the description of the bag on the left, one of the new Louis Vuitton tote bags for this Spring. The price tag: $2,660.

I'm trying to figure out if it's leather, or if there's something else about it that makes it that expensive. After all, it seems to be nothing more than one of those plastic totes you can buy in the dollar stores in working class neighborhoods. I have several of them, in several sizes. The only difference between this one and mine is the blue Louis Vuitton logo.

I can see paying thousands of dollars for a Louis Vuitton bag. I've actually done it. However, unless someone can tell me why I should plunk down $2,660 for a plastic tote bag, I'm not buying this bag. Marc Jacobs, you have gone mad.

Buzzing off for now...

Update: Well, what do you know, it is leather! I found it on the LV website. Hmmmm, it still reminds me of my plastic totes. Thanks but, no thanks.

I bet we will see in Jane, Glamour, or other mags that show you how to look designer for less the bags from the 99 cent store filling it for the nearly 3K original!

the bag above is called a "Ghana must go bag". it's used in several west african countries to carry load. I can't believe LV would try to sell it.
