The Ultimate Girl's Night Out

There's nothing like hanging out with your best gal pals, but imagine taking that experience to a higher level. You can do just that with Shecky's Girl's Night Out. This event is in NYC from June 23rd-June 27th, from 5-10pm. It's a great way to unwind from a long day. It's like fusing happy hour with shopping. Picture sipping on complimentary cocktails while sampling products, beauty services, getting in on unbelievable sales from emerging designers, and fun giveaways. I am not making this up!

You and your friends would get spectacular goodie bags too, but unfortunately, the Deluxe Goodie Bag tickets are sold out. I think it's still worth it to go, goodie bags or not. General admission is $10 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets are selling fast as word gets out, so hurry. But if you're not in the NYC area and feel you're missing out, don't fret. This event is held in other cities as well, so click here to see when it's coming to a city near you. Enjoy the fun ladies!

Take Advantage of Spa Week!

April is just not the month for showers, it’s also time to get that much needed spa treatment at an affordable price. Founded by Cheryl Reid in 2004, Spa Week is an event from April 14th-20th (some spas may have it for the entire month), in which you could get $50 spa treatments.

The goal of Spa Week is to be healthy and not break your budget doing so. Many of us have a stressful lifestyle and rarely take a much needed time out. Massage is probably the most popular spa treatment. It's a very therapeutic way of getting our bodies and minds back in balance. Not only is it relaxing, but it improves circulation and releases toxins. It’s vital to drink plenty of water to flush those toxins out.

I haven't had the time to slow down lately, so I purchased a 60 minute, hot stone Swedish massage (only $50!) from Finesse Day Spa and I cannot wait to get it. You could get it too! Spa Week is not limited to New York City. Click here to find out if your state is one of the 21 markets that participate in Spa Week.

The Buzz Is Changing

Well ladies, I've been so busy lately with my other projects that the time has come to pass the blogging torch, so to speak. I have found a writer to help keep The Glamorous Bee up-to-date!

Tiana Bragg has worked in the television industry and is now embarking on a career as a freelance writer. As I have done, she will blog about "All Things Glam," but from a younger, more up-to-date perspective. While I will continue to post here periodically, Tiana will now be the main contributor to The Glamorous Bee.

Please join me in welcoming Tiana!

NY Fashion Week Fall 2008: The Kickoff

It's a gloomy, rainy day here in New York City, where Fashion Week Fall 2008 is kicking off with a full day of shows. The rain won't dampen my parade however, because I am so looking forward to this week! Last night I attended a "warm-up," if you will, a little cocktail party for Coutorture bloggers. There I am at the party in the photo above. (I'm the one wearing the hat.) It was great to finally meet some of the members of this great community. If you're not familiar with Coutorture I suggest you check it out. You'll be glad you did.

Shows scheduled today include BCBGMaxazria, Nicole Miller and Erin Fetherston. Tonight I'll be attending the Na-Be by Victorya Hong Show. Victorya Hong was a contestant on this season's "Project Runway." She counts Marc Jacobs as one of her favorite designers so it'll be interesting to see if he influenced this new collection in some way. This probably will be the only show I attend for the week, but, as a member of Coutorture I'll still have plenty of photos and videos to share with you. In addition to that, I have another treat for you: a Special Fashion Week Correspondent!

Alison Blackman (aka. "Advice Sister Alison") is a life and career expert credited with bringing the advice/info-tainment genre online 16 years ago. She is the Creator of the Advice Sisters Online Publications Advicesisters.net and lifestyle blog, the What Works beauty, cosmetics and fashion review column and a by-subscription-only ezine. Alison has graciously agreed to share some of her Fashion Week backstage and runway experiences with Glamourous Bee readers!

So be sure to check back here daily for the all the latest happenings from Bryant Park and the surrounding areas. Enjoy the week!

Welcome To February: Short But Sweet

I simply cannot believe that it is February already! I almost feel as if I mised January. It went that fast. Last night I was thinking about this short month, trying to decide if there is anything important to look forward to. Here's what I came up with:

African-American History Month: I always love the programs and activities offered this month. This time around, however, I get to offer something, rather than just watching and reading. Starting this Monday, February 5th, I will have Black History Monday at The Glamorous Bee. You will be able to read about a different African-American beauty or fashion pioneer for the next four Mondays. This Monday, find out why Jacqueline Bouvier's wedding gown is a part of African-American History!

Alice Ritter Show at Fashion Week: I'm going! Thanks to Julie Frederickson at Coutorture, I'll be seeing my first ever show at Fashion Week on Saturday. I can't wait! I'll tell you all about early next week.

Divabetic: Makeover Your Diabetes: If you'll be in New York City the week of the 22nd, plan on attending this event, for women living with or affected by Diabetes. Along with health and nutrition advice they'll be giving free makeovers and image consultations! For more info see my recent post about it.

There was one event that was supposed to take place this month (today, actually) that has been pushed back: The relaunch of Perfumecritic.com at which I am a new staff writer. Due to a tragedy, this will not take place until April 1st. I will keep you posted as the date draws near.

So, welcome to February! Buzzing off for now...

A New Year, A New You (Part 3): Origins Modern Friction

I am ending my little discussion of new beauty routines for the new year by returning to an old favorite. I first talked about Origins Modern Friction in The Buzz Begins, one of my first blog posts, back on August 6th. I feel now as I felt then: Use this gentle exfoliating treatment and get smoother, clearer-looking skin with shorter-lasting breakouts.

Origins now has a total-body version of this product, which I have yet to try. Hmmmm, Origins did send me that $10-off coupon for any $50 purchase in January. So maybe in a few weeks I'll be able to say that I have tried it.

As 2006 comes to a close, I look back on it very fondly. Since I began this blog at the end of July I have learned so much, made a ton of friends, and have truly enjoyed myself. To all the other bloggers who have taught me so much, I thank you. Thanks also to everyone who took the time to read my posts. The coming year looks to be a big one for The Glamorous Bee. I'll have posts on promising new skincare lines and fragrances, coverage of Fashion Week in February, and a whole lot more! The buzz continues next week. Happy New Year!

Nan Kempner American Chic--Opening Today

The long-awaited exhibit of Nan Kempner's fabulous clothing collection opens today at The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, here in New York City. Mrs Kempner was a New York socialite whose clothing collection was so large she had to convert two of her bedrooms into closets. Julie Fredrickson, Editor-In-Chief of Coutorture, was lucky enough to see a preview of the collection yesterday. This beautiful Yves Saint Laurent ensemble was one of the pieces shown to her.

I'll be making my own little trip to the Met this weekend to see the exhibit, and I'll tell you all about it next week. I can't wait!

Thank God It's Glam: Friday Musings

My computer desk is starting to resemble something a tornado hit. In an effort to make it less of a mess, I started looking to see what's been piling up on it. Here are a few tidbits I found:

Shevon Gant Ceramics: Last Sunday I went to a shopping event in Harlem called Shop 'N Mingle. About a dozen or so women of color showcased their designs and works of art in a very small upstairs room at Turning Heads Day Spa. I'd read about this event on MySpace and was looking forward to it, until I got there. That little space was so crowded with people, that I felt like a sardine in can. Crowded spaces cause me to forget everthing I'm supposed to or want to do. I'd wanted to chat with some of the ladies about their work and share it with you, my readers. The only thing I managed to do was purchase this mini jewelry tray from Shevon Gant. It's really cute. I'm actually using it for my perfume samples. You can get one on her website for $12.00.

Dooney & Bourke Tent Sale: This is going on now, at the D&B factory in Norwalk, CT. The hours are 10am-9pm today and tomorrow, and 11am-3pm on Sunday. Call (800) 347-5000 for info. Happy Shopping!

Bluefly Special Offer: From now through 12/31/06, receive an extra $15 off a single online purchase of $150 or more. Use promo code GIFT15 at checkout. (Valid for a one-time use only.)

This last one is from Bronx Diva: There will be a Tracy Reese Sample Sale next month! The dates are 1/12 - 1/14. Check the Previous Posts list on her blog's sidebar for all the details.

Well that's all I've been able to dig up for now. I'll see what other goodies I can come up with this weekend. Reminder: 17 shopping days left until Christmas!

A Warning About Gift Cards

My friend Janie has fowarded me another email she received which I felt I just had to pass along. The sender took this from Snopes.com:

"Well the crooks have found a new way to rob you of your gift card balance. If you buy gift cards from a display rack that has various store cards, you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is 'activated,' they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your cards from a customer service person where they don't have the gift cards viewable to the public. Please share this with all you family and friends."

Be careful ladies!

Glam Days Ahead

These last two months of the year always seem to be extremely busy for everyone. I was looking at my calendar and, some of the events I've marked down seem to be worth sharing:

Lucky Shops, November 9th and 10th, Gotham Hall, 36th and Broadway, New York City. This is a chance to shop for designer merchandise at prices up to 70% off retail. Any shopping event promising that much of a markdown is definitly worth checking out!

Shop 'N Mingle, Sunday December 3rd, 1:00 pm, Turning Heads Day Spa, 218 Lenox Ave & 121st Street, New York City. Billed as "Uptown's premier shopping event," these Shop 'N Mingles have been very successful in the past. This will be the first one I attend. I'm looking forward to it. For information, send an email to shop_n_mingle@yahoo.com.

Nan Kempner: American Chic, December 12th through March 4, The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The late Nan Kempner was a New York Socialite with a clothing collection so big that two of her bedrooms were converted into closets. She once joked that she loved parties so much she would go to the opening of a door. I'll have more on Mrs Kempner in a future post.

Fred Kimmel's WUJ Space Show, December 28th, Kenny's Castaways, New York City. Fred Kimmel is the guitar player in The Sali Oguri Band, whom I have writeen about in previous posts. The time of this show is currently TBA. I'll have more details as they become available.

So, if you're going to be in New York City soon, put these events on your calendars!

Foundations For Success

This morning I was looking at an email I received form Top Button and noticed a wonderful thing being done by Bare Necessities and Chantelle this month. Two percent of all Chantelle bra sales at the Bare Necessities website will be donated to Dress For Success. According to their website, the mission of Dress For Success is "to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life." So shopping for foundations this month can help provide a foundation for success for women who might not otherwise have one. Happy shopping!
