A Sweet, Day Fragrance

The other day I talked about Jo Malone’s Dark Amber and now I want to mention its counterpart-Lotus Blossom and Water Lilly, the fragrance to wear during the day. I like the light floral scent. It has a flirty essence too, but it's not as sensual as the Dark Amber. It’s still great to wear, whether to work, on a day trip or just to smell nice while staying home all day in your pj’s.

I think it's good to have to both on hand, especially since you could mix the fragrances together. A Jo Malone rep instructed me to put on the Dark Amber first, since it’s heavier, and then apply the Lotus Blossom. The result gave an interesting scent that I couldn't pinpoint, but loved anyway. Why not give it a try?

A Great Evening Fragrance

I tried Jo Malone's Dark Amber cologne a few months back at Sniffapalooza. The rep explained to me that it's their evening fragrance and I could smell why. It's part of their Kohdo Wood Collection, and it has a unique smell. They describe the scent as a "sensual and calming blend that encourages a sense of tranquility." There is a dark essence to it, but it's not too powerful, as if you'd smell like you bathed in it.

To me, this fragrance is more flirty than any other with a floral scent. I love floral scents, but it's good to switch it up sometimes. Dark Amber complements an exciting evening out, and I am sure people will notice it. I know it will be perfect for the awards ceremony I'm going to this week! If you purchase online, complimentary shipping and a cologne sample of your choice is included. Enjoy!

The Elegance of Robert Piguet's Parfums

Robert Piguet was considered "the most Parisian of fashion designers." But his perfumes also made him well-known. His fragrances are Cravache, Baghari, Bandit, Visa, and his most popular, Fracas. I sampled all five and they each have their own personality. I felt like wearing a tiara when I wore his fragrances! They made me feel so elegant.

Cravache: Started as a men’s fragrance in 1963, and now has a light, airy scent. I think it can be worn by men and women. It has a wood and citrus smell and it's not too strong.

Baghari: This soft and romantic scent blends citrus and flowers. The smell is sweet and innocent, but this one is light too.

Bandit: My favorite one! It is designed to be exotic and sultry, and it sure is. I’d wear this for any great night out. I like that it's powerful, yet not overbearing. I received many compliments when I wore it the other day.

Visa: This one is number 2 on my list of faves. It smells sweeter than Baghari, but again, it’s not too much on the senses. It’s funny that it's described as being addictive, because I honestly couldn’t stop sniffing it!

Fracas: This is his signature fragrance and the most desired. Bernadette was moved enough sing its praises over a year ago and I must do the same. I like this as much as I like Visa. I experienced it as a floral, airy scent and I think it can be worn at any time.

Pink Manhattan Purrfume Returns

Long-time readers of this blog are familiar with singer and perfumer Sali Oguri. In addition to her music career she is the creator of two beautiful fragrances, spicy, sexy Persephone and the more demure Pink Manhattan Purrfume.

Persephone is now in retirement but I'm sure her fans are hoping she'll make a comeback one day. After all, Pink Manhattan was out of commission for a while, but now it's back, in a new, limited edition 1/3 fl oz size.

This Purrfume is a delicious blend of fresh peach, pink hibiscus, gardenia, French vanilla, and sensual skin musk. If you're interested in trying it click here to find out how to order it.

The Scent for Spring

Today is the first day of Spring and I cannot wait until the weather warms up even more! I believe having the right scent goes hand in hand with the new season. The right scent for me? Beauty Rush's Body Double Mist, by Victoria's Secret.

This fragrance comes in an array of flavors, from Strawberry Fizz to Candy Baby, but my favorite is Slice of Heaven. It has that sweet, yet subtle smell of vanilla. The mist has two layers of skin conditioners that also give off that sexy scent. No matter how much you put on, you won't smell like you've bathed in it-that's how light it is!

I've had my bottle for 7 months now and I still have more than half left, even though I use this fragrance often! They sell it in the stores and online, so click here to check it out! Right now Victoria's Secret is having an online sale where you could buy any 2 of the body mist, body glimmer wash, or body whip moisture cream for $18. Or perhaps you can make a trip to the store because they're always having a sale on their beauty products. Happy Spring!

Persephone Perfume Oil: Sinfully Delicious

My friend the performer-perfumer Sali Oguri recently sent me a large package of perfume samples to explore at my convenience. Included in the package was a small vial of pale-yellow oil attached to a black card.

I turned the card over in my hands and saw pink writing, which said, "Persephone, Forbidden skin scent: a sinful blend of dark chocolate, amber, blackberry, pomegranate and Mysore sandalwood." It was Sali's latest creation and it smelled delicious. Sinfully delicious.

A short time later I wore Persephone to work. If I could have, I would have walked around all day with my wrist to my nose. That's how much I loved it. Instead, I enjoyed "forbidden," clandestine meetings with this sinful scent while I thought no one was watching.

Are you tempted to indulge in Persephone? Well, you had better do it quickly. I read on Sali's blog today that this fragrance is actually a limited edition, available only until February 14, 2008. Sali will be offering free shipping on all orders (inluding $6 carded samples) until December 31, 2007. To find out how to order, click here.

Roxy Parfum: For The Girl In Every Woman

Earlier this year, Roxy, the hot clothing and accessories retailer that has been burning holes in the wallets of young girls, introduced its first fragrance, called simply, Roxy. Their PR people were kind enough to send me a sample package a while ago and, when I first read the press packet, I didn't think it was a fragrance I'd want in my collection.

I was wrong. Though I'm well past the age (and size) of someone who shops at Roxy, I am definitely not letting their fragrance slip by me. I love citrus scents, and Roxy's top note is pink grapefruit. Luscious. It breaks down to magnolia, violet, lily of the valley, frangipani, ylang ylang, amber and musk. The company calls it a "glowing, sunny floral scent which is also suprisingly sophisticated." I don't know if they expected someone like me to enjoy it, but I do and I'm sure several other women in my age group will enjoy it as well.

You can buy Roxy Parfum on their website or at Sephora.com.

Scents of Personality, Part 2

Have you taken the Urban Botanic (UB) scent personality test, yet? If not, now's the perfect time to do it! A while ago I wrote about UB, which sells fragrances through in-home workshops much like Tupperware parties. Now, however, if you can't get to a party (or don't have an Urban Botanic Consultant in your area) you can create your own signature fragrance in the privacy of your own home.

To create your own signature fragrance simply visit AddictedToFragrance.com and take the online personality test. The results will calculate your own personal Urban Botanic Signature Collection. If you want to purchase the collection, here is what you get:

Six fragrances (perfume oils) personally selected for you.

One bottle each of unscented Parfum Spray, Nourishing Body Lotion, and Refreshing Shower Gel along with simple, step-by-step instructions.

15% off all Urban Botanic unscented products in the future.

The perfume oils in your UB Signature Collection will last long enough to scent up to 16 bottles of perfume.

All of this is worth $179, but Urban Botanic is now offering it at a special price of $89.95.

Nervous about paying even $89.95? I was too, until I found out about a way to get a sample of one of the six fragrances selected: Once you've completed the test, email the results, along with your mailing address, to Shawna Straub, Urban Botanic Manager. She'll send a sample of one of the fragrances right out to you! Her email address is shawna@urbanbotanic.com. Happy fragrance shopping!

A Floral For The Non-Floral Woman

The Creed Master Class I attended a few weeks ago was chock full of information about the prestigious fragrance house. Creed scents permeated the room on dozens upon dozens of fragrance strips, so much so that I lost track of what I was sampling. At the end of the class everyone was presented with gift bags which included 4 sample vials. While Angelique Encens, the fragrance I fell in love with during the class, was not included, one of the four turned out to be suprisingly beautiful: Creed 2000 Fleurs.

A floral, 2000 Fleurs' notes are violet, magnolia, rose, lilac, jasmine, iris, amber and musk. All those floral notes and the word "fleur" [flower] in the name was a turn-off at first. I rarely wear something so richly floral. I'm usually drawn to fresh, clean and/or citrusy scents, such as Philosophy Amazing Grace or Jo Malone Grapefruit. I'll also wear a gourmand (foodie) scent like Jo Malone Blue Agava & Cacao. In other words, I wasn't expecting to like 2000 Fleurs. However, I did.

Is there anyone who doesn't think rich, heady floral when they think of "2000 flowers?" There I was, expecting an overpowering floral and what did I get? A really nice, green floral. Very light and refreshing.

This is a very expensive fragrance, as all Creed fragrances are. However, if you search for it, you might be able to find it for a decent price. I hope to be able to add it to my fragrance collection before long.

Pomegranates For Your Skin

We've all heard about the benefits of consuming pomegranates, but have you ever heard of using them on your skin? Italian company Santa Maria Novella has a Pomegranate Soap made of all-natural whole milk and infused with Florentine pomegranate oil.

I discovered this soap at Lafco's Soho store several weeks ago. When I held it to my nose I smelled a very feminine, powdery scent. Not the type of scent I'm usually attracted to. But I fell in love with it, probably because it reminds me so much of Chanel No. 5, one of the few very feminine powdery scents I own. The pomegranate oil is obviously for softening the skin, not for the olfactory system.

Triple-milled and made by hand using 19-Century equipment, S M Novella's Pomegranate Soap does soften my skin when I use it and my skin doesn't have that tight, sticky feeling that can come from using other soaps. It's available in two sizes. The toilette size, pictured above, is $14.00 and the bath size is $20.00. Also, if you want the experience to last all day, try the fragrance. I visited Lafco this past weekend and sprayed some from the tester bottle on myself. It went on feminine powdery and dried down to a fresh, clean scent. As soon as I can afford to plunk down $84.00 for it, it's mine.

A Spring Fling, Courtesy of Sniffapalooza

This past weekend I attended my first ever Sniffapalooza event, here in New York City. Called "Spring Fling," it was a weekend filled with scent testing, shopping and smoozing along with lots and lots of sample collecting.

Registration for "Spring Fling" was for either one day or both days. I signed up for both, which turned out to be more than I could handle. I knew I had a problem when I failed arrive on time for the 8:15 am breakfast at Bergdorf Goodman's. The room was all filled up, so I could only sit outside the door. I heard presentations by representatives from Creed, Annik Goutal, and Tom Ford. Tom Ford's rep, by the way, unveiled his newest collection of 12 fragrances, to be sold as a set, available for pre-ordering that day at Bergdorf's.

At the end of the breakfast the real fun began. There was non-stop sniffing and spraying all weekend long. My nose never got a break! I got in line with the breakfast attendees and received the first of many gift bags of the weekend, filled with skincare and fragrance samples. Everyone was then free to explore Bergdorf's famous Beauty Level. We were lavished with even more samples and gift bags, and encouraged to enter raffles for the chance to win more gifts, including one worth thousands of dollars. I was very impressed with a scent I smelled at the L'Artisan Parfumeur counter, La Chasse Aux Papillons Extreme, a wonderful light floral. By then I probably already had over 20 samples of different fragrances to take home. I realized that Papillons was the one I really wanted. But, of course, there was no sample of that one.

We left Bergdorf's a short while later and went over to Henri Bendel. Bendels roped off an area just for us, but it was way too small. I felt like I was being detained, so after listening to a rather long pitch from a salesperson, I left the store and got some much-needed fresh air. Lunch was at Seppi's on West 56th Street, in the Parker Meridian Hotel. The food was fine (when it finally arrived) but the speakers were even better. Marlen Harrison of Perfumecritic.com had us getting to know the person next to us and deciding just what kind of fragrance wearer we each were. Also, Franco Wright and Adam Eastwood of Lucky Scent talked about the fragrance lines they sell and Mark Thomas talked about the venerable British fragrance company he works for, Floris Of London.

After lunch there was a trip to Takashimaya on Fifth Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets, for more fragrance sampling, along with tea and cupcakes. By then I was totally exhausted. I took the samples of Vertigo and Hypnotica I received and went down the street for a cup of decaf at Starbucks. The last stop of the day was at Saks Fifth Avenue. I only lasted about ten minutes before I knew I had to go home, wishing I hadn't paid for day two.

Yesterday morning I left my apartment refreshed and ready to sniff. The first stop was the Bond No. 9 store in Soho. Perfumer Laurice Rahme welcomed us into her "salon" with a beautiful brunch and gave each of us a purse-size bottle of her West Side Fragrance. She also gave us breaking news: On June 1st Bond No. 9 will release its next New York scent. It is called Coney Island. Coney Island has notes that smell like a margarita, among others. Smells good enough to drink!

Le Labo was next, followed by Lafco, both less than a mile from each other, also in Soho. Le Labo is the place that custom-blends fragrances for you, a tiny store that felt like a sardine can with all of us Sniffas in it at once. Lafco is an importer of several Italian fragrance and skincare lines. It was there that I made my one fragrance-related purchase of the weekend: Pomegranate Soap from Santa Maria Novella. This soap smells truly heavenly. I definitely recommend it!

By the time I left Lafco, my olfactory system was pretty much shot to hell. There were several other stops to make during the day, but I could only manage one more: L'Artisan Parfumer on Thompson Street. It was there that I finally got my La Chasse Aux Papillons Extreme sample. I was at peace then. I went home to play with all of the samples I'd collected and vowed never to abuse my nose that much ever again.

Scents of Personality

I now have a signature scent, based on my own personality. It is called Bee-Luscious and it is a delicious-smelling gourmand of coconut, almond and cinnamon. My own custom scent, named specifically for me!

No, I did not suddenly come into an enormous fortune. I did, however, make the acquaintance of a woman named Shawna Straub. Shawna is a scent consultant for a company called Urban Botanic. Urban Botanic was started in 2005 by Shawna's long-time friend McKenna Gordon. The products are available at Urban Botanic Parties, in which hostesses receive incentives for inviting scent consultants over to teach their friends how to create their own custom scent.

Right now the company offers perfume ($24.95), lotion ($14.50) and shower gel or bubble bath ($12.50). By the beginning of 2008 they will also be offering home scents.

Do you want your own custom scent, too? Well, the first step to creating your own signature scent is to find out what your scent personality is. According to Urban Botanic there are six possibilities: fruity, floral, herby, leafy, woodsy or spicy. Mine is herby, hence the inclusion of almond in my fragrance. You can find out which category you belong to by taking this Personality Test. Click here to get started and, 10 minutes later, you'll know your scent personality. Also, mention The Glamorous Bee when you take the test and you'll receive a free sample, based on your scent personality: Make sure torequest more info for product and fill out the form with Glamorous Bee and your scent family in the notes. They will then send out your free sample. (Samples can be scent to US addresses only at this time. Sorry.)

So, what's your scent personality?

Dear Santa (Part 3): Do You Mind If I Stir Up a Fracas?

In 1948 French couturier Robert Piguet created a true fragrance classic. Ever since then, sophisticated women around the world have been wearing this seductive white floral. When worn, one experiences notes of tuberose, jasmine, jonquil, gardenia, liliy of the valley, white iris, orange, sandalwood, vetiver, and musk. Sounds so heavy, but believe me, it's not! It truly blends with a woman's natural scent, leaving her smelling sexy and delicious. So tell me Santa baby, can you help me stir up a little Fracas?
